Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine is one where science and social commitments walk hand in hand. The aims of the department are to fulfill the dream of creating committed Ayurvedic specialist doctors in the branch of Salakya Thanthra along with sincere patient care services, to provide quality Ayurvedic medical education and research, to educate Ayurvedic graduates with theoretical and clinical knowledge to serve humanity and to Systematize Ayurvedic knowledge in Salakyathantra to suit international standards.

Here comprehensive treatments and researches relating to the diseases of Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat, Oral cavity, Teeth, Head, Scalp & Neck are undertaken. In 1998, on the eve of implementing department system, the present Dept of Salakyathantra was established.

CME for medical officers, practitioners and teachers of Ayurveda colleges.

Weekly department seminars, case and topic presentations by PG scholars, invited talks by academic and clinical experts.

Patient Facilities

Outpatient Unit
The outpatient unit is open for all, on all week days except Sundays from 8.00AM to 01.00 PM. We have an average of 150 patients per day. The unit deals with diseases of eye (Nethra), ear (Karna), nose (Nasa), throat (Ganda), mouth (Mukha), teeth (Danta) and head & scalp (Siras). The majority of cases are of eye and E.N.T.
In Patient Unit
The whole faculty of the department is divided to four units – SA I, SA II, SA III & SA IV - with a senior medical officer, a junior medical officer, post graduates and internees to assist them.
Ayurvedic Ophthalmological Examination Unit
The unit is well equipped with all modern equipment for proper diagnosis. The examination fee is very less and free for BPL patients.
Refraction And Retinoscopy Unit
The unit is well equipped with visual acuity test aids like Snellen charts, Ishihara chart, auto refractometer and retinoscopes. The assistance of a Nethra technician (optometrist) is available in the department which helps in proper visual acuity tests and lens prescription
Retinal Clinic
The unit mainly deals with fundus examination. Here the ophthalmoscopy examinations are done by the post graduates with the supervision teaching faculties. The unit is equipped with ophthalmoscope, slit lamp, Digital fundus camera etc.

Perimetry
Clinical assessment of Glaucoma is performed by detecting the extent of field defect along with other significant ocular changes using automated perimeter and ophthalmoscopy.

Ayurvedic E.N.T Examination Unit
The unit is equipped with all essential instruments for proper diagnosis like E.N.T set, bull's eye lamp and head mirror, audiometer, tympanometer etc
Pharmacy Unit
We are equipped with a separate small pharmacy unit which intends to prepare special medicines for salakya rogas which are not available in open market.
Mini Theatre
Para surgical and surgical treatments of the eye and ENT diseases are done at the mini operation theatre of the department.
Eye Exercise unit
Many refractive as well as accommodative problems of eye occur as a result of uncoordinated movement of extra ocular muscles.We have a well functioning Eye Exercise Unit attached to our department.

Facilities for Public

Dept. of Salakya tantra has conducted medical camps in the various parts of Trivandrum district, and keen interest was taken in conducting medical camps In rural areas. Special awareness program were conducted along with this medical camps. In addition to this, Allied with the various voluntary organization medical camps and awareness programs were conducted. Screening tests were conducted in various schools across Thiruvananthapuram districts and were given proper instructions in which visual and other disabilities were found.
We are equipped with a small pharmacy unit which intends to prepare special medicines for Salakya diseases which are not available in open market.
We are having a distillation unit which prepares different Arkas (eye drop preparations) used for instillation in eyes free of cost

The outpatient unit is a research oriented department, full-fledged with all modern diagnostic techniques and pure Ayurvedic treatment procedures. The hospital clinical laboratory with fully updated technologies also helps a lot in the proper clinical diagnosis and giving proper care to patients. Treatment procedures like seka, ascyothana etc. for our patients are provided in the same O.P unit hall.

In Patient Unit
The whole faculty of the department is divided to four units – SA1, SA II, and SA III & SA IV - with a professor, Asst.professor, post graduates and internees to assist them. The Inpatients unit is a research unit and great care is given to the patients in their treatment both physically and mentally. The holistic approach of our science patients works great in the treatment and paws a smooth relation between the patient and doctors. The hospital expense is very less and is free of cost for poor people.

Cases of academic and research interest like refractive errors, diabetic retinopathy, Hypertensive retinopathy, optic atrophy, macular diseases, 3rd nerve palsy, bell's palsy, auto immune diseases, chronic sinusitis, rhinitis, hearing loss, tinnitus, Tonsillitis etc. are admitted and treated with good results in our inpatient unit.
