Govt. Ayurveda College Hospital for Women and Children is a unique hospital of the country providing both ayurvedic and allopathic health care under one umbrella. The department of Kaumarabhrithya, a unit of Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram is functioning in the campus of govt. Ayurveda College Hospital for Women & Children, Poojappuara since its formation on 1955.

The department has gained advances in various fields of Kaumarabhritya such as management of Developmental disorders, Nutritional Disorders, therapy for post infectious sequel preventive dermatology, and control of recurrent respiratory infections. It has also tremendous experience in execution of modified forms of Panchakarma therapy in children. There is also development in the field of management of childhood injuries and Physiotherapy methods. The department is also promoting traditional child care practices in newborns and infant. The Department has expanded its wing by commencing the Post graduate degree course in the year 2003-04.

To impart adequate knowledge in Rachanasareera as per CCIM syllabus and to develop proper skill so as to mould efficient physician and surgeons to serve society in health and illness.

Academic Facilities

Department has sufficient infrastructure to provide the academic as well as clinical standards stipulated by the CCIM.The Women and children hospital common to Prasooti Tantra and Kaumarabhritya departments has a bed strength of 106 out of which 35 beds are reserved for Kaumarabhritya. The hospital is provided with moderately equipped clinical lab, Operation Theater, Panchakarma Theater, Physiotherapy unit, Speech Therapy unit and a centrally sponsored PP unit.

Service of a modern pediatrician is available in the allopathic wing of the hospital.. Every year the department imparts theoretical knowledge and clinical training to 50 under graduate students. A same number of house surgeons get clinical training from this department. Since the establishment of P.G course in 2004, a batch of 5 students is being admitted every year and is trained for the period of 3 years.. The teaching staff handles UG clinical classes from 8 am to 11 am and Theory classes. The PG training, teaching, guiding and supervising were also done by available faculty. Internet facility is also available in the department.
Library
The department has a well equipped library which contains both modern as well as Ayurveda books.

Patients Facilities

The Department and the Hospital wing led by eminent faculties with their expertise is well known for the successful treatment of Pediatric disorders. This Department is well versed in pediatric management and is undertaking researches in different types of skin lesions (Karappan), recurrent respiratory infections, hearing impairment, child hood obesity, Ayurvedic immunization,Autism,ADHD,dyslexia, etc.

The department has OP IP Facilities, both PG and UG courses and speciality clinics for developmental and nutritional disorders. The department has its own website, quarterly newsletter- SAISAVAM and charitable society WARD working under it.The dept. has a well functioning OP and IP wing providing services to all children coming from different parts. The dept. has the following specialty clinics.

Developmental disorder specialty clinic - manages the neuro-psychological issues of pediatric population
Nutrition specialty clinic - deals with nutritional problems and the..........................
Well Baby clinic - screens children, helps in preventing and curing the nutritional deficiency disorders in children.

Facilities for Public

Medical and Screening camps
Department conducts general as well as screening camps- particularly for developmental disorders- in various urban and rural areas of Kerala and provide appropriate O.P and I.P treatment. The department has conducted 11screening camps for developmental disorders,2 for Skin lesions,1 for Asthma ,1for Nutritional disorders and around 7 General medical camps.
WARD – Welfare Association of Rehabilitation of Differentially Abled
Most of the children attending our clinics belong to poor community particularly those who are affected with developmental disorders. For the welfare of these children the WARD – Welfare Association of Rehabilitation of Differentially Abled is also functioning in the dept. with Professor as Secretary, Associate Professor as the Treasurer with all other teachers and PG students as ex-officio members.
The department
Has prepared & distributed brochures on departmental activities, Garbhini Charya & Balopacharaneeyam.
Has conducted screening camps 10/yr from past 5 years in various parts of Kerala to diagnose and to create awareness to the public about the childhood illness.
Has conducted Anganvadi reorientation through ISM dept. in Cherthala.
Has created and screened documentary film on Child Welfare facilities.
