The Pharmacognosy Unit originated in the University of Kerala was brought under the administrative control of the Principal, Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1965. Later it was merged with the Post Graduate Centre in Ayurveda (PG Centre). Subsequent to the amalgamation in the year 1987, again the Pharmacognosy Unit was brought under the direct control of the Principal, Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram.

As per GO.(MS) No. 14,Dated 22/01/1999,the existing post of Professor of Pharmacognosy was re-designated as Senior Research Officer(Botany) and a new post of Senior Research Officer(Chemistry) was created in the Drugs Standarization Unit(DSU).

The Pharmacognosy Unit(PHU) including Model Demonstration Garden (MDG) is now under the administrative control of the SRO(B) and that of DSU is vested with the SRO(C).

High resolution Video Trinocular Microscope with dual Chip Scanner (Imported)
This is a new model of equipment by which we can record the microscopic preparations, sections of plant materials and all microscopic objects which will be very helpful for the pharmacognostical identification of drugs. We can take the measurements of all microscopic objects in microns, inches, centimeter, millimeter, and all other types of measurements involved in the specification.

Courses

The technical staffs of Pharmacognosy Unit are taking classes for PG Students of Dravyaguna Vijnan of Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram and Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. We are guiding their thesis works also.

The PG Students from Dravyaguna Department are regularly visiting our garden as a part of their curriculum. The UG students of Ayurveda Colleges are regularly visiting the garden for identifying medicinal plants and collecting herbarium specimens.

Our institution posses a prestigious collection of raw drugs of medicinal importance to create awareness among the students, researchers, general public, etc.

Seminars

Pharmacognosy Unit is conducting National Seminars on Medicinal Plants with a view to motivate the general public, farmers, etc. about the importance of cultivation and conservation of medicinal plants. National seminars and workshops provide a platform for the gathering and interaction of eminent Scientists, Academicians, Ayurvedic Physicians, Researchers etc. about recent developments in the field of Ayurveda and allied Sciences. Scientific paper presentations, invited lectures and other deliberations presented in the seminar can create inspiration and interest in cultivation, conservation and research in medicinal plants. So far we had conducted Eight National Seminars. The proceedings of Eight National Seminars published are available in our library for reference.

Facilities for Public

Awareness Programmes

we are conducting training classes and workshops in identification, cultivation, conservation and uses of important medicinal plants to Agricultural Officers, Forest Officials, Field Staffs, selected farmers etc. as per request from agriculture and forest departments. 'Herbal Garden Visit' arranged as a part of the training programme enable them to identify and understand the morphology, habit, methods of cultivation etc. of medicinal plants.

Lab Services

The main objective of Pharmacognosy Unit is to conduct research works in medicinal plants and establish their genuineness with special importance to their identification according to Ayurvedic texts. Trinocular and binocular digital microscopes available in the unit are used for identifying the internal structure of medicinal plants. Photomicrographs taken are included in the publication "Pharmacognosy of Ayurvedic Drugs-Kerala". We are guiding the thesis works of MD students in the Dravyaguna Department of Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Research & Publications

Pharmacognosy Unit is conducting research works in medicinal plants with special emphasis on plant identification based on Ayurveda texts. The morphological and anatomical analyses are being carried out for this purpose. The findings of our research works are being published in our own scientific publication viz. "Pharmacognosy of Ayurvedic Drugs-Kerala". This is a unique publication which has got wide acceptance from the researchers and academic communities. So far we have published 13 volumes of Pharmacognosy of Ayurvedic Drugs-Kerala. Pharmacognosy of about 140 medicinal plants have been studied and published in these publications. In addition to this we had published "A Hand Book on Medicinal Plants", "Huj[kky§Ä", "km[mcW tcmK§fpw \nhmcW amÀ¤§fpw", etc. These publications are available in our library for reference and also for sale. These publications are also available in Publication Division, Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram.
