Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine is one where science and social commitments walk hand in hand. The aims of the department are to fulfill the dream of creating committed Ayurvedic specialist doctors in the branch of Salakya Thanthra along with sincere patient care services, to provide quality Ayurvedic medical education and research, to educate Ayurvedic graduates with theoretical and clinical knowledge to serve humanity and to Systematize Ayurvedic knowledge in Salakyathantra to suit international standards.

Here comprehensive treatments and researches relating to the diseases of Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat, Oral cavity, Teeth, Head, Scalp & Neck are undertaken. In 1998, on the eve of implementing department system, the present Dept of Salakyathantra was established.

Introduction

Shalakyatantra is a comprehensive branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda concerned with the diagnosis and management of Eye, ENT, Oro-dental, head and scalp disorders. Earlier Salyatantra and Shalakyatantra were considered as a single department and from 1998 onwards on the eve of implementing department system; Shalakyatantra was established as a separate Department. Since then, three seats have been allotted for Post Graduate degree in Shalakyatantra every year. Recently a Diploma course in Netra Rogas has been started with course duration of 2 years from 2019.

The Department has been able to provide quality treatment in improving vision in diseases like Refractive errors, managing Chronic inflammatory eye diseases like keratitis, uveitis, chorioretinitis and Optic neuritis, Corneal opacities, Dry eye, and preventing progression of diseases like Diabetic retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Hereditary macular dystrophies, Age related macular diseases and Optic atrophy. Among ENT disorders, we are successfully treating Allergic diseases like allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, adenoid hypertrophy and Hearing loss. Integrated treatment approach is being implemented in treating Dental disorders along with Ayurvedic management with a well equipped dental unit and a qualified Dentist.

Our mission is to provide quality medical education and research in the field of Shalakyatantra thereby creating committed specialists dedicated in providing sincere patient care services suiting international standards. Quality Teaching and training is provided for Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma and Paramedical students. Our vision is to develop clinical skill in disease diagnosis using modern investigative procedures as well as analysing the disease pathogenesis through Ayurveda and to provide a Standardised treatment protocol for the above mentioned diseases formulated through evidence based practices.

The Department functions in the main College Campus of Government Ayurveda College in MG road near Pulimoodu, Thiruvananthapuram.

Academic Facilities

Department has all the facilities to maintain the Academic standards as per CCIM norms. The department has a well furnished Library, Seminar hall with LCD projector and LED TV for clinical class and presentations, a separate room for distillation of eye drops, training facilities in Kriyakramas, Sashtra Anusashtra Karmas, patient examination and advanced investigative procedures.

Courses

70 UG students of BAMS are trained in the subject of Shalakyatantra every year during their final profession. Theory classes, clinical classes, Practical Kriyakalpa, IP and OP clinical training are provided. Batches of 3 students are trained for PG course in Shalakyatantra- M.S (Ay.) every year with course duration of 3 years. Expertise training is provided for them to develop skills in patient examination, surgery, treatment, topic presentation and teaching. Dissertations on clinical works are also submitted by these students during their final year. Recently, a Diploma course in Ophthalmology- D.O (Ay.) has been started from 2019 onwards and a batch of 2 students are admitted and trained in Ayurvedic Ophthalmology for a period of 2 years.

Facilities for Public

Dept. of Salakyatantra has conducted medical camps in the various parts of Trivandrum district, and keen interest was taken in conducting medical camps in rural areas. Special awareness program were conducted along with this medical camps. Screening tests were conducted for detecting visual problems in various schools across Thiruvananthapuram districts.

Patient services

Outpatient Unit

The outpatient unit is open for all, on all days except Sundays from 8.00AM to 01.00 PM with an average of 200 patients per day. Treatment are provided for diseases of eye (Nethra), ear (Karna), nose (Nasa), throat (Kanda), mouth (Mukha), teeth (Danta) and head & scalp (Siras).

The outpatient unit is a research oriented department, full-fledged with all modern diagnostic techniques and pure Ayurvedic treatment procedures. Documentation of cases are also done separately so as to analyse the disease trends and to find the effect of treatment. The hospital clinical laboratory with fully updated technologies also helps a lot in the proper clinical diagnosis and giving proper care to patients. Treatment procedures like Seka, Aschyothana, Anjana and Karnapoorana for outpatients are provided in the same O.P unit hall.

Special OP facilities are available from 11AM to 1 PM for Allergic diseases of ENT on Mondays, for Diabetic Retinopathy on Wednesdays and Headache on Fridays along with free medications. An interdisciplinary approach has been  established in treating Dental disorders along with a modern Dental unit functioning daily except on Sundays from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm with a dentist and dental hygienist is also available with treatments like Scaling, filling; Dental extraction, Removable partial denture, crown, retainer and ortho tightening are available. There is also Special OP facilities with free medications for Dental diseases every Tuesday from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm.

In Patient Unit

The whole faculty of the department is divided to four units – SA1,SA II, SA III & SA IV - with a Professor, Assistant Professor, post graduates and internees to assist them. The holistic approach of our science works great in the treatment and paves a smooth relation between the patient and doctors. The hospital expense is very less and is free of cost for poor people.

Cases of academic and research interest like refractive errors, diabetic retinopathy, Hypertensive retinopathy, optic atrophy, macular diseases, 3rd nerve palsy, bell's palsy, auto immune diseases, chronic sinusitis, rhinitis, hearing loss, tinnitus, Tonsillitis etc. are admitted and treated with good results in our inpatient unit.

Induction of advanced investigations and instruments like corneal topography, Slit lamp with digital camera and Applanation Tonometer, A-scan, B-scan and Visual field analyser supervised by a well trained Optometrist is provided at minimal charges.

Clinical assessment of Glaucoma is performed by detecting the extent of field defect along with other significant ocular changes using automated perimeter and ophthalmoscopy.

New ENT instruments like Tympanometer, Impedence Audiometry, Otoacoustic emission and Endoscopy unit with facilities for ENT examinations.

Pharmacy Unit

We are equipped with a separate small pharmacy unit which intends to prepare special medicines for salakya rogas which are not available in open market.

Mini Theatre

Para surgical and surgical treatments of the eye and ENT diseases are done at the mini operation theatre of the department.

Eye Exercise unit

Many refractive as well as accommodative problems of eye occur as a result of uncoordinated movement of extra ocular muscles. We have a well functioning Eye Exercise Unit attached to our department.
